A detailed review of an asset management assessment for the Canadian Department of National Defence underscores a well-known challenge facing many organizations: infrastructure is frequently retained in service well beyond its initial design service life, exposing potential underlying risks.

Anne Morton, Director General, Strategic Portfolio Initiatives at Department of National Defense
Anne began working in real estate over 30 years ago and has extensive experience in real property, client relationship management, leasing, procurement, mediation and arbitration. After years working in the private sector, Anne joined the public service in 2001 working in Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) in the Real Property Branch. Prior to joining the Department of National Defence in 2016, Anne worked as a Senior Director, National Capital Area (NCA) Real Estate Services, where she was responsible for the management of approximately 800 leases totalling about 20,000,000 square feet of office and industrial space in the NCA. Currently, Anne is Director General, Strategic Portfolio Initiatives in the Infrastructure and Environment Group at the Department of National Defence. Her responsibilities includes pursuing innovative ways of partnering with private sector, implementing good policy and governance that a prudent custodian requires, and standing up a strong Client Relationship Management regime.
